Difference Between Single Vision and Multi-Focal (Progressive) Glasses

1. Number of prescriptions

  • Single Vision: The entire lens has one fixed prescription.
  • Multi-Focal (Progressive): The lens has multiple prescriptions that change gradually from top to bottom.

2. Vision coverage

  • Single Vision: Corrects only one distance — either far away or up close.

Clear for distance → blurry for near, and the other way around.
  • Multi-Focal (Progressive): One pair works for distance, intermediate, and near vision at the same time.

Good for walking, using a phone, computer, and daily use.

3. Comfort & convenience

  • Single Vision: You need to switch or take off your glasses for different distances.

Inexpensive and easy to get used to.
  • Multi-Focal (Progressive): No need to take them off — more convenient.

Requires a few days to adapt.

In short

  • Choose single vision if you only need to correct one vision issue.
  • Choose multi-focal (progressive) if you want one pair for all distances

(especially if you have both myopia and presbyopia).
